Easy Homemade BBQ Sauce
Tomatoes. I used cans of diced organic tomatoes from Aldi for pretty much everything. Mostly because they’re cheaper than fresh tomatoes and also I can’t grow tomatoes in my garden to save my life. So… canned it is. If you happen to have tons of fresh around for some reason go ahead and try this recipe with those!
If you don’t have an Aldi nearby, any organic canned tomatoes will do. San Marzano on Amazon are good because they don’t contain citric acid (a big no-no for me, since I deal with mold illness).
Sweeteners. Most store-bought bbq sauces will contain a ton of sugars. I like to keep things as natural as possible, so I opt for sweetening my homemade bbq sauce with honey and molasses. Molasses helps give the bbq sauce part of its signature flavor (basically helps keep it from tasting like ketchup). The honey sweetens it up a bit.
I like to use organic blackstrap molasses for my bbq sauce. I usually get it from Azure Standard. You can use whatever kind you want. I also like to use raw honey (especially since you’re not cooking this – extra health points!), but again, you can use whatever you can get your hands on.

Vinegar. In order to get your homemade bbq sauce to have it’s noted tang, you need some vinegar. You can use white vinegar if you want, but I like to use organic apple cider vinegar. It’s pretty cheap and is actually pretty good for you! Plus I do like the flavor it gives my bbq sauce.
Mustard. I’m really not sure if this is a normal ingredient for bbq sauce everywhere, but here in the south… it is. My family likes spicy brown mustard, so that’s what I use in this recipe. If you like a milder mustard, you can try that. I have also made this recipe and just left the mustard out completely, so if you’re not a mustard fan, you can leave it out.
Seasonings. Must have seasonings for this easy homemade bbq sauce are garlic, onion, and pepper. I like to use organic for all of these, and you can even use raw garlic and onions if you want more zing! I’d use about 4-8 cloves of garlic, depending on their size, and about 1/4 cup diced onion.
