Packed with nutrients and delicious deep chocolate flavor, this paleo and GAPS-friendly chocolate avocado nice cream is a perfect treat for warm weather!
All things nice.
I’ve always been a fan of homemade ice creams. There’s just something real and nostalgic about it. Plus it’s incredibly delicious and so much healthier for you than store-bough. But since I said goodbye to dairy (it’s been a long and slow farewell), I’ve been getting into a different kind of homemade ice cream… nice cream.
Simply put, nice creams are ice creams made from fruit instead of based off milk products. Nice cream = fruit; fruit = breakfast… So logically that technically makes nice creams a breakfast food, right? Either way, nice creams have been my go-to lately when I need a cold, smooth treat.
You put what in your nice cream?
Most nice creams are banana based, probably because bananas yield a nice creamy texture when frozen. (My Mango Berry Nice Cream uses a banana base.) But you know what else is nice and creamy? That’s right. Avocados.
While it’s true that I’ve never really been a fan of avocados, after introducing them into my diet during my time on the GAPS Intro Diet I found myself craving them. And since I still really couldn’t stomach the taste of them on their own, I discovered they made a perfect banana substitute in my nice cream!
Sneaky health.
If you’re not a fan of avocados either, let me encourage you to give this recipe a try anyway. It really *really* doesn’t taste at all like avocados. And it’s a great way to sneak the amazing nutrients avocados boast into your body!
Avocados are fullll of vitamins (A, B, C, E, and K) and minerals like magnesium, potassium (more than a banana!), iron and copper. But the most beneficial nutrient avocados offer is fat. Avocados are some of the richest sources of monounsaturated fats you can find.
If you’re not sure what monounsaturated fat is, it’s the stuff that’s good for you. In fact, your body needs monounsaturated fats to help fight against cancers, heart disease, weight gain, and more!
More nice cream and avocado goodness.

Chocolate Avocado Nice Cream
Free from grain, gluten, eggs, dairy, and refined sugar.
Ingredients
- 2 fresh, ripe avocados, pitted and peeled
- 1/2 cup honey (use maple syrup or agave for vegan)
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder (I love this organic fair-trade stuff!)
- 2-4 tablespoons coconut milk (I usually make my own)
Instructions
Place all ingredients in a blender (I use a Blendtec) and puree.
Pour into an ice cream maker (I use this KitchenAid attachment) and churn for about 20 minutes. This step is optional, it just makes the nice cream fluffier. *
Transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze until set.
Let sit out a few minutes to soften before serving.
Notes
* For no-churn, pour straight from blender to freezer-safe container and stir every 1/2 or so until set. It will not be as light as if you used an ice cream maker, but it will still be delicious!
You can never go wrong with chocolate ice cream, and this looks so creamy and delicious. I love the extra boost of nutrients from the avocado as well!
Thanks, Jean! 🙂
