This easy Paleo Dark Chocolate Eggnog is a delicious and nutritious twist on the classic holiday drink. It’s easy to make and full of vitamins and minerals!
Me + eggnog = true love.
I don’t remember the first time we were introduced, but one thing I know for a fact: eggnog and I love each other. We’ve been fast friends since college, at least.
Even though my first sip was of the junk-filled stuff from the grocery store, it didn’t dissuade me from loving eggnog. I quickly learned to make my own, and soon eggnog became a holiday special in my kitchen.
Scratch that. Eggnog became a special. Who needs holidays?
Holidays not necessary.
It’s true, I’m down for eggnog any time of year. And since I don’t need to wait for the grocery store to start carrying it, I’m free to enjoy as I please! Making it from scratch is healthier, anyway. And bonus – if I make it from scratch I can make it however I want!
Here are a few of my favorite eggnog versions:
And now dark chocolate eggnog. ‘Cause we all know that life is better with chocolate!
Dark Chocolate Eggnog
This easy-peasy paleo dark chocolate eggnog is basically just a mash-up of my favorite homemade hot cocoa and my aforementioned eggnog smoothie. It’s a simple blender recipe (plus the heating on stove, though that’s not necessary) and full of nutritional goodness!
First off, I love the yolks in this recipe. Why? Egg yolks contain more vitamins than the whites. They’re full of good things like vitamins A, B6 & 12, D, E, K, and folate. Plus the yolks also contain 90 percent of the egg’s calcium and iron!
And for a little extra protein I add in a few teaspoons of Perfect Supplements grass-fed gelatin. In fact, I do this to most of my hot drinks and smoothies. I love it because it’s 100% gluten-free, non-GMO, and kosher!
A note… or two.
If you live in one of those places where it never gets quite cold enough to live off hot drinks, you don’t need to heat this one. Just add the honey and rum to the blender along with everything else and enjoy!
If you don’t do alcohol, no worries, the rum is totally unnecessary for a delicious drink. 😉
Also, even though I love eating my yolks raw for optimal vitamin and mineral content, the yolks in this eggnog aren’t raw, so don’t freak out on me!

Paleo Dark Chocolate Eggnog
Free from grain, gluten, dairy, and refined sugar.
Ingredients
- 2 c. coconut milk (I make my own)
- 2 egg yolks (free-range/pastured)
- 2 t. kosher gelatin (I use Perfect Supplements grass-fed gelatin)
- 3 T. cocoa powder
- 1/8 t. nutmeg + some for sprinkling on top
- dash Himalayan salt
- 1/4 c. honey
- 2 t. rum (optional, if you don’t do alcohol)
Instructions
Whisk gelatin into coconut milk.
Put the remaining ingredients (except honey and rum) into a blender and puree until frothy. (I like to use my trusty Bendtec.)
Pour into small saucepan and heat over medium/low until mixture thickens (about 5 minutes), whisking frequently to prevent burning.
Turn off heat and stir in honey and rum, to taste.
