Though smoothies have been around for ages, I was admittedly a little late to the smoothie game. During spring break in college I was introduced to them at the frozen custard shop I worked at. Mango and banana smoothies became my lifeline!

After graduating and getting married, though, I forgot about them. Maybe it had something to do with living in Montana, where it’s freezing 9 months out of the year… Kidding.

Beets & Berries Smoothie BowlQuick and easy nutrition.

After having kids, smoothies were back on the menu again! Not because I lived in a warmer climate (still Montana), but mainly because I needed something quick and easy to eat for breakfast. And, other than eating a piece of fruit, you can’t get much quicker, or easier, than a smoothie. Throw a few things in a blender, puree, and viola.

Smoothies are an easy way to get a boatload of nutrition into your body! And if you happen to have those kids who refuse to eat healthy things like spinach or kale or apples, smoothies are a wonderful way to hide them! Not that I’ve ever had to do that. My kids have always been the model of eating healthy without complaining….

*ahem*

Beets & Berries Smoothie Bowl 1Why a smoothie bowl?

As much as I love smoothies, I was quite confused when the whole smoothie bowl faze came out. Why in the world would I bother pouring my smoothie into a bowl and eating it with a spoon?

Silly people.

Then I did a little research. Apparently, your brain can tell the difference between eating (chewing) and drinking (not chewing). Also apparently, this difference affects how your body digests your food! Who knew?

So when you’re drinking a smoothie out of your cup, with or without a straw, your body is going to process all the nutrients in your smoothie as if the were a drink. (Not that that’s always bad.) And when you’re eating your smoothie bowl with a spoon and chewing all those delicious toppings, your brain tells your digestive system that you’re eating a meal.

If you’re still like, meh, I’d rather drink it, then go for it my friend. But if you’re up for eating your smoothie like it’s a meal, dig in!

This Beets & Berries Smoothie Bowl is full meal status. Not only does it have fruit (banana), it also has veggies (beets!). For the berries, I like to use Perfect Supplements açaí berry powder. If you have a different berry powder, you can totally use that, or you could just add in a handful of fresh berries! I also like to add in grass-fed beef gelatin to give this smoothie an extra protein boost, but you can leave that out, if you want.
