No, I haven’t always eaten chocolate for breakfast. Growing up, my mom was extremely uh… frugal with our family’s treat consumption. Chocolate was a once-a-week – if that! – special thing. And more often than not, if we asked for homemade hot chocolate or a milkshake, it came in the form of hot carob or a carob shake. ‘Cause that’s how my mom was. And is…

However, as all moms know, pregnancy changes things. When I was pregnant with my fourth, chocolate was pretty much all I wanted to eat. For breakfast. I basically ate this vegan, gluten-free chocolate applesauce cake every day during the last two trimesters of my pregnancy!
