Give your salad a dose of healthy fats with the superfood hidden in this delicious GAPS-friendly Creamy “Buttermilk” Avocado Dressing!
Learning to love.
There once was a day when you would have to pay me to eat an avocado. Seriously. They were on the same level as lima beans, eggplant, and … I really can’t think of anything else I don’t like that much.
Then came the cutting out of dairy and I needed SOMETHING to make my chocolate pudding and smoothies thick and creamy. So I caved and began submitting chocolate covered avocados into my diet. The ones I could scavenge from my ravenous 2-year old, that is.
And they weren’t that bad, covered in chocolate. But then again, chocolate covers a multitude of sins. Or is that love… Sometimes I get the two confused.
Kidding. 100% kidding.
A change in tastes.
After my latest stint with the GAPS intro diet, though, my tastebuds are yet again changing. For the better, I think. I can now handle avocados by their lonesome, without the aid of a chocolate covering.
I’ve even started to crave them.
What the what? Something must be wrong with me!
Creamy “Buttermilk” Avocado Dressing
Anyway, now that I’ve added salads into my almost-to-full-GAPS diet, I’m in want of dressings. I’m not too fond of mayonnaise by itself, even my tasty homemade mayo, and olive oil alone is a tad bitter. So I needed to come up with something to dress my naked salads.
Avocados to the rescue!
This dressing is the perfect fit for me! Since the only dairy I can do is cultured and Kerrygold butter, I used sour cream and a little milk kefir to give this creamy dressing its “buttermilk” flair. I also added in a few herbs to give it a little ranch-ish flavor.
If you can’t do cultured dairy – sorry. I’ve got nothin’ for you. You could try using coconut yogurt, but I haven’t tried that and am afraid it would give the dressing a funny taste. If you enjoy coconutty things on your salad, though, be my guest and give it a shot!

This looks like a super addition to my love of all things “saucy”.
Bet it would be good on so many things – yes to egg salad, omlettes, scrambled eggs or
roasted veggies!!
Ooh! Yes! I bet it would go great on all those things!
That looks simply amazing Raia! I can’t wait to try this!
Thank you! I hope you enjoy it, Renee. 🙂
You humor under the chocolate covered avocados had me cracking up! This dressing looks so creamy and perfectly thick, so perfect when you’re wanting a yummy salad dressing.
Haha. Everything is better with chocolate. 😉
That creamy is calling my name! Love that it has probiotics as well. I would put it on everything!
Thanks! It’s great on so many levels!
Raia, I love your writing. 🙂 Such a fun post. You funny woman. 😉 Great recipe!! Yay avocado (and chocolate, sometimes).
Haha. Thanks. 😉
I feel like I am FOREVER on the hunt for the perfect ranch… and here is another one for me to try! Love that you made it so creamy with avocado!
Thanks! I feel you’re pain. Ranch is a hard one without all those weird additives. 😉
YES! I love avocado dressing packed with herbs, but I never thought to make it with milk kefir. I have all the ingredients and will give it a go! Thanks, Raia ❤️
I hope you enjoy it, Yang! 🙂
The avocado dressing is GORGEOUS. I’m sure it tastes equally good.
Thank you so much!
Sounds delicious! I often make an avocado based dressing but have never made a ‘buttermilk’ version with sour cream or kefir. Luckily, I can handle a bit of dairy, so will have to try it.
I hope you enjoy it, Irena!
I love creamy dressings, and this one looks incredible! We eat salads pretty much everyday in the summer so I can’t wait to try this out!
I hope you enjoy it, Kari!
I love a good creamy salad dressing! And haha would you believe, I once felt the same about avocado. It’s only been something I’ve really falled in love with in recent years… I didn’t like it at all growing up.
Glad to know I’m not the only one! Haha!
Avocado is the perfect way to add creaminess to any recipe. It’s full of healthy fats and adds so much flavor. This would be great on tacos too!
Yes, I’m sure it would be!
I love the creaminess of avocado, and I’d like to see my husband and grandson appreciate it more than they currently do. Maybe this dressing will be the key!
I hope they enjoy it, Cathy!
