A family staple.

Smoothies are a way of life in my house. There’s not a week that goes by when my kids don’t bug me to make a smoothie for a snack or even for lunch. This is not just a summer thing for us, it even happens in the winter.

This peanut butter mocha smoothie is kind-of a cross between a breakfast and a dessert. With real-food ingredients, it’s pretty safe to have for an after breakfast treat (I don’t advocate coffee before breakfast!).

Peanut Butter Mocha Smoothie

The liquid. Coffee. And milk. That’s all you need! For the coffee, you can use whatever kind you like. Regular, decaf, strong, medium, light roast – suit yourself. You can even use an herbal coffee sub, if you want! My friend Jessica Espinosa has put out a wonderful little ebook, DIY Herbal Coffee Substitutes that will give you plenty of fun options. They’re delicious and healthy! But if you happen to be a coffee-lover, feel free to use your regular cup of Joe in this peanut butter mocha smoothie. I personally use VitaCup’s low-acid coffee. I like it because it is mycotoxin-free, and as someone who has been struggling with mold illness for years, keeping molds out of my coffee is very important for me!

For the milk, I like to use Thai Kitchen’s coconut milk or my homemade coconut milk when I don’t have raw milk on hand. If you can handle dairy, please feel free to use organic or raw milk!

Peanut butter. I know peanuts are kinda controversial right now, with all the allergies going on. But I’m not opposed to enjoying them at home once in a while. This peanut butter mocha smoothie is just one of my favorite ways to savor peanut butter. I would suggest you always get organic if you can, and if you can’t, make sure the peanut butter you use has no nasty oils or sugars added! Your body will thank you. I like to make my own peanut butter with unsalted peanuts. It’s super easy if you have a blender or food processor.

Cocoa. If you’ve read any of my other recipes that include cocoa, you’ll know that I pretty much exclusively use Azure Standard’s cocoa powder. It’s hands-down the cheapest and most delicious organic, fair-trade cocoa powder there is! Cocoa is great to add in to so many things, not only because it tastes amazing, but also because it happens to be one of the best sources of antioxidants you can find. It is packed with vitamins and minerals, like B12, niacin, riboflavin, and vitamin E, as well as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, and calcium.

Banana. This is the *only* sweetener this peanut butter mocha smoothie needs! Just one, lowly little banana. Or one big banana, if you want it a little sweetener. I find that, even though I’m not the biggest banana fan, I can handle them in this smoothie! The cocoa and coffee mask the banana flavor, and the natural sweetness of the banana provides just the right amount of sweet for the cocoa!

Optional add-ins. Like all my smoothies, I love to add in a little protein boost. My favorites are a fresh, raw egg yolk from my backyard chickens, or a scoop of collagen. Egg yolks actually contain so many vitamins, like B6, folate, B12, A, D, E, and K, as well as most of the eggs calcium and iron content!

If you’re not into eggs, you can add some grass-fed collagen instead. I usually use Perfect Supplement’s collagen since it’s completely kosher and made from grass-fed cattle. It’s also 100% pesticide and hormone-free.
