This homemade real food, dairy-free Mexican Hot Cocoa Mix is the perfect way to spice up your hot cocoa life.
Hot cocoa, my obsession.
Even though I live in the south, where it’s pretty warm year-round, I have a thing about hot cocoa. Regular, peppermint, or spiced, I love it all! I even like it subbing carob for the cocoa (the way my mom made it). Whether it’s January or June, I regularly ask my husband if he’d like a cup after the kids are in bed.
‘Cause good moms don’t share treats with their kids.
He less enthusiastic about hot drinks than I am, and since I don’t want to make a whole pot for just myself (well, maybe I do… but I don’t), I decided it was high time to come up with a mix I could just plop in some warmed milk.
Adding a bit of heat to hot cocoa is my newest thing.
Though I enjoy all my chocolate
tall and dark, every now and again I get a hankerin’ for spicy. I’ve already tried spicy + chocolate in other delicious goodies, like cake and fudge, and I love it. But in hot cocoa those spices really pop!
Since my kiddos don’t like spicy, that means I need to make it after bedtime. That’s ok with me, it goes along nicely with me not
being able to wanting to share. 😉
Even though I’ve never been to Mexico, and have no idea if Mexican Mexicans (as opposed to American Mexicans [though I suppose all Mexicans are technically American…]) drink hot cocoa, I based the spices in this hot cocoa mix on other “Mexican” treats.
Lots of cinnamon.
A bit of chili powder.

I also upped the nutritional value of this recipe (’cause all y’all know that hot cocoa is nutritious – haha) by adding in some grass-fed gelatin. It’s good for your skin, hair, teeth, nails, and joints, as well as improving your digestion and helping detox your liver.

Homemade Mexican Hot Chocolate Mix
Free from grain, gluten, eggs, and dairy.
- 1/3 cup cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup coconut sugar
- 4 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 2 tablespoons grass-fed gelatin (I like this kind)
- 1 cup dairy-free chocolate chips (optional, I use my Honey-Sweetened Chocolate Chunks)
Blend all ingredients except chocolate chips until powdered. Mix in chocolate chips and store in a jar.
To make a cup, stir 2 heaping tablespoons into 12 oz. milk of choice and heat until steamy.
