These Dark Chocolate Banana Doughnuts make the perfect dessert! But they’re also healthy (and easy) enough to make for breakfast! They’re gluten-free, dairy-free and egg-free, with a vegan option.
Dessert. . . or breakfast?
Every now and again my kids beg to have doughnuts for breakfast. And of course if I’m serving them for breakfast they must be a little breakfasty. Like, with bananas in them. And of course if I’m making them, they’re probably gonna be chocolate. Because this is me we’re talking about, after all.
Thankfully, chocolate and banana is an amazing flavor combo. And while bananas are a perfectly normal choice for breakfast, in this house chocolate is healthy enough to enjoy a the start of the day, too!
Dark Chocolate Banana Doughnuts
The first time I make these chocolate banana doughnuts, my oldest asked for “the white stuff,” i.e. shredded coconut on top. Since daughter number two considers shredded coconut “candies,” I was all for that as a doughnut topping. Yes, I’m the mom who tries to convince her kids fruit is candy.
Nature’s candy. 😉
Anyway, you don’t have to top them with coconut, they’re delicious with a plain chocolate frosting (easy recipe in the card below), or sprinkled with almonds… whatever.

Dark Chocolate Banana Doughnuts
Free from gluten, grain, eggs, dairy, and refined sugar.
Ingredients
For the doughnuts:
- 2 ripe bananas
- 2-3 tablespoons honey (more if you like sweeter doughnuts)
- 2 tablespoons coconut milk (I like to make my own)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (I like to make my own)
- 1/4 cup coconut flour
- 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder
- 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1/2 cup sorghum flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon Himalayan salt
For the frosting:
- 1/4 cup dairy-free chocolate chips (I use my homemade chocolate chunks)
- 2 tablespoons coconut milk
Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350 and grease a doughnut pan (I use this doughnut pan.). Alternately, you can use a doughnut maker.
In a large bowl, mix everything with a handheld mixer.
Spoon about a 1/4 cupful of batter into doughnut pan.
Bake for about 15 minutes, or until they spring back lightly when touched (bake 7 minutes if using a doughnut maker).
Remove and cool before icing.
For the frosting, slowly melt chocolate chips in small saucepan, then stir in coconut milk or water until smooth.
Dip doughnuts in chocolate.
Makes 4-6 donuts, depending on the size of your pan.
