All the smoothies.

There are a few things I could eat for any meal, any time of year. Brownies, for instance, or biscuits and gravy. But smoothies are right up there with both those delicious meals. (Yes, brownies are meals in my family.) Not only are smoothies super dang easy to make, you can pack just about anything in them you want, and none will be the wiser!

Spinach? Stick it in a smoothie. Kale? Stick it in a smoothie. Spirulina? Stick it in a smoothie. Cod liver oil? … You get the point. 

But some days you just need a special smoothie treat to get you past breakfast. That’s where this beauty comes in. This chocolate peanut butter smoothie is my husband’s all-time favorite smoothie. I do believe he’d admit he’s addicted to it! If he doesn’t have one at least every week, I swear he goes through withdraws.

Can you really blame him, though? Doesn’t this smoothie just look lovely? It tastes lovely too. 😉 As my husband puts it: “It’s wonderful to be able to eat something that tastes like ice cream for breakfast.”

Bananas. Bot only are bananas pretty cheap, they’re pretty healthy, too. Like most fruits, bananas provide antioxidants like flavonoids and amines. They also contain magnesium and potassium, which are important electrolytes. Bananas also have vitamins B6, D, and K, potassium, zinc, phosphorus, and manganese. Plus they’re any easy sweetener for smoothies. No need to add in a bunch of sugars!

Peanut butter. Even though peanuts aren’t the best food, nutrition-wise, I’m not opposed to enjoying them every now and again. This chocolate peanut butter smoothie is one of my favorite ways to enjoy a little peanut butter. Since peanuts are a highly sprayed crop, I would suggest buying organic if you can. If you can’t, at least make sure the peanut butter you use has no nasty oils or sugars added! I like to make my own peanut butter. It’s super easy if you have a blender or food processor on hand.

If you’re trying to stick to a paleo lifestyle, or simply can’t eat peanuts, this smoothie is easily modified. The peanut butter can be traded for almond butter or walnut butter. I haven’t tried sun butter, but I’d assume that would work, as well.

Cocoa powder. I love to use Azure Standard’s cocoa powder for all my cocoa needs. It’s absolutely the cheapest and tastiest organic, fair-trade cocoa powder there is! If you didn’t know it yet, cocoa is one of the best sources of antioxidants you can find. It is full of good-for-you things like vitamin B12, niacin, riboflavin, and vitamin E, as well as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, iron, manganese, zinc, and calcium.

Milk. For the liquid in this chocolate peanut butter smoothie, I like to use Thai Kitchen’s coconut milk or my homemade coconut milk when I don’t have raw milk on hand. Azure Standard’s coconut milk is good, too. If you can do dairy, please feel free to use organic or raw milk instead!

Optional ingredients. If you like your smoothies a little sweeter, you may want to add a little honey into this chocolate peanut butter smoothie. Otherwise, it will be a dark chocolate smoothie. Which I love! For a little added sweetness I use a tablespoon of Azure Standard’s honey. You can use whatever sweetener you like. Maple syrup, coconut syrup, stevia, whatever you like should work fine.

Another option to add nutrients into this smoothie is a fresh, raw egg yolk. Egg yolks are my absolute favorite smoothie addition! They not only add so many vitamins and minerals, as well as protein, calcium, and iron. They also make the smoothie nice and thick. I also like to add a tablespoon of chia seeds, as well. Chia seeds (or frog eggs, as my kids call them) are high in anti-oxidants, omega 3’s, fiber, and protein, as well as calcium, potassium, and magnesium.
