For the majority of my life, I’ve stayed pretty far away from coffee. I’ve never been the biggest fan, but the real reason for my abstinence is allergies. Growing up my coffee allergy was so bad that I couldn’t even walk down the coffee isle of the grocery store without my throat starting to close up!
Pretty crazy stuff.
My coffee allergy never upset me much, though. I didn’t particularly like coffee, so I didn’t miss what I couldn’t have. Until children became a part of my life…
Once I became a mother, I began to wish for that special little pick-me-up that coffee gives. You know… caffeine. ‘Cause after being up most of the night with a newborn and running around after toddlers all day, you need all the help you can get!
Any mom can attest that childbearing not only gives you cute little bundles of
insanity joy – and a lack of sleep – it changes your body as well. Usually we mothers aren’t too pleased with these changes, but in the case of my coffee allergy, I was quite happy!
Since the birth of my oldest, my allergy to coffee steadily decreased. And after going on the GAPS Diet, I’m pleased to say I haven’t had any reaction to coffee!
While there are wonderful alternatives to coffee, like herbal teas, hot chocolate (always a great choice!), and golden milk (my newest favorite drink!), I truly began to wish for the flavor of the ‘real thing.’
There are so many opinions out there on whether or not coffee is good for you or not, and I’m not here to argue one way or the other. Generally, though, I’m of the opinion that most things are ok to have in moderation.
So I enjoy my coffee every now and again, usually in the form of this easy and healthy Chunky Monkey Frappe. If you want to make yours with an herbal coffee, it’s delicious that way, too!

Real Food Chunky Monkey Frappe
Gluten, grain, egg, dairy, and sugar free.
- 2 spotted bananas
- 1/2 c. almond or peanut butter
- 1 T. chia seeds
- 1/4 c. coffee
- 1 t. vanilla (I like to make my own)
- 1 1/2 c. milk of choice (I use my homemade coconut milk)
- 16-20 ice cubes (about 2 cups)
Place all ingredients in blender (I use a Blendtec).
Puree on high until no large chunks of ice remain.
