Applesauce Banana Spice Bread
Free from gluten, dairy, and refined sugar.
Ingredients
- 2 large bananas
- 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 2 fresh, organic eggs
- 1/2 cup honey
- 2 teaspoon vanilla extract (I like to make my own)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder (it’s easy to make your own)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 cup brown rice flour
- 2 tablespoons arrowroot powder
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Grease a loaf pan and set aside.
In large bowl, mash bananas. Add applesauce, eggs, honey and vanilla. Mix until creamy.
Place baking powder and soda on top of creamed mixture. Add remaining dry ingredients and mix until wet through.
Pour into greased loaf pan and bake 40 minutes.
Remove from oven and let rest in pan a few minutes before removing.
Let cool before slicing.
This looks really tasty! The crumb looks pretty good, too! 🙂
I ended up throwing out the whole loaf 🙁 I don’t know if I did something wrong but mine was not even close to cooked through and even if it was the texture would have super chewy and not enjoyable (that’s how the edges were). I’m guessing it’s from the gluten free flour that I used. What a disappointment.
So sorry it didn’t work for you, Nicole! I know how frustrating it is to feel like you wasted money and ingredients. 🙁
What a great combination of flavors! I am excited to try this one. I also want to try your peanut butter chocolate chip cookies! Yum!!
Thanks! Hope you both enjoy it. 🙂
This was delicious! I used half buckwheat flour (since I didn't have any brown rice flour) and half an all-purpose gluten-free flour mix, and it was very tasty. Very, very moist. Thank you for the recipe!
I absolutely loved this recipe! I used half of brown rice flour and half of all-purpose GF flour,(I ran out of brown rice flour!) and instead of arrowroot, I used tapioca starch. It still turned out wonderful! Fantastic recipe! Thank you! 🙂
Thank you Olivia! I'm so glad that it turned out well for you and that you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting me know! It's always encouraging to hear updates like this. : )

I hope you enjoy it, Crystal! Thank you so much for stopping by. 🙂
Great recipe! I love banana bread as well. I didn’t think to put applesauce in it before, even though I use it in my pumpkin bread….but in my banana bread I use greek yogurt. I may have to switch it up just for fun 🙂
Thanks for joining us at From The Archives Friday!!
Thanks so much, Ashley! I love yogurt in banana bread! It’s always fun to find new things to add in, too. 😉
What size loaf pan did you use?
I use a regular 9×5 inch loaf pan.
Can I use almond flour or coconut flour in this recipe?
I wouldn’t add more than a few tablespoons of coconut flour in this recipe, as it you’d have to rework the recipe, but you may be able to use almond flour in place of the gluten-free flour. I haven’t tried it, though, so I can’t say for sure!
Mmm, this sounds so lovely! Baking gluten-free can be a challenge, but it’s so rewarding when a recipe turns out so good. Banana breads are so good, and this one looks amazing!
Thank you so much, Willow. Banana breads were my saving grace when I went gluten-free. 😉
My kids would love this and well me too!! It looks very doable for my crazy kitchen! Thanks for the beautiful recipe!
You’re welcome, Cindy! I hope you and your family enjoy it as much as mine does! 🙂
Wish I hadn’t looked at this before I had breakfast! What a great recipe. Love your tip on making your own vanilla extract, too. Definitely going to try that!
Haha. 😉 I totally know what you mean. I look at all the chocolate things before breakfast just to torture myself. I’ve been making my own vanilla extract for about 5 years now, and I’ve never gone back! It’s so easy and tastes so good!
THis looks so good!! I would love to give this a go soon
Thank you so much, Swayam! I hope you get a chance to enjoy it!
I love banana bread and adding applesauce is SUCH a great idea. Yum!
Applesauce is such a wonderful sub for oils in quick breads, I’m sure you’ll love it, Kate!
This looks like it would be perfect with a cup of tea! Can’t wait to try it out.
Thank you, Jennifer! I hope you enjoy it!
Banana bread is always a winner! I love that you added applesauce to yours too.
Agreed, Brianna! Applesauce is so wonderful in baked goods!
Do you have to use arrow root powder and brown rice flour? Can I just make this with gluten free flour?
If you have an all-purpose gluten-free flour blend that would work just fine. 😉
Can I substitute almond flour for the brown rice flour? If so, is it in the same equal parts?
Sorry I just saw this, Beth! No, you can’t substitute almond flour, sorry! If you need to sub out the rice flour, I would use sorghum. 🙂
Just starting my gluten free journey. Can I substitute tapioca flour for the arrowroot flour?
Yes! You can. 🙂
